Library Journal Review
In this updated fifth edition, Wallace (medicine, David Geffen Sch. of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles; The New Sjogren's Syndrome Handbook) discusses new drugs to treat lupus as well as recently discovered information about the pathology of the disease. Wallace's goal is to increase awareness and so encourage earlier diagnoses, since lupus is difficult to diagnose, and patients may have the condition for years before it is identified. The book begins with an overview and a brief history of lupus as well as its possible causes. Wallace also provides a background on inflammation and immunity as they relate to the disease. Several chapters outline the many different ways lupus can affect the body. The book includes tables and figures throughout plus a glossary of terms and a list of resources at the end. VERDICT Though the target audience is general, this book's reliance on technical jargon demands a lot from readers. Patients and their family members who seek more detail than most consumer-level books and online patient information will find this a beneficial resource.-Dana Ladd, Community Health Education Ctr., Virginia Community Univ Libs., Richmond (c) Copyright 2012. CHOICE Review
Due to the overwhelming response to his first edition (CH, May'96), Wallace (UCLA) revised and expanded his book with additional material on apoptosis, cell signaling, lupus susceptibility genes, lupus clusters, undifferentiated connective tissue diseases, selective cox-2 inhibitors, topical nonsteroidals, the use of herbs, modern immunosuppressive therapies, and osteoporosis. Relying on his vast experience with the largest lupus clinical practice in the US, Wallace writes in lay terms for the many lupus patients who lack an understanding of their disease and its potentially debilitating symptoms. The book is divided into five sections: introduction and definitions, inflammation and immunity, what causes lupus, where and how the body can be affected by lupus, and the management of lupus erythematosus. As in the first edition, the etiology of the disease, its mechanistic effects on various body organs, its most common symptoms, and its treatments are discussed so that patients and their families, including health care providers, have a current and detailed understanding. The first to write in lay language about lupus, Wallace has made a truly significant contribution, since nearly one million people suffer from the disease in the US, more than from leukemia, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined. All levels. H. S. Pitkow; Temple University
Summary
Lupus, a disease of the immune system, can be quite deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on this disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 3,000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, originally published in 1995, immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease. Now Dr. Wallace has once again completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This book discusses new drug information and newly discovered information about the pathology of the disease all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. In particular, Wallace discusses the first drug for lupus to be approved by the FDA--belimumab (Benlysta)--as well as other drugs in clinical trials. Readers will also discover sections on the science of lupus and breakthroughs in research including: genetics, microbiome, and clinical trial methodology. And as in past editions, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? Indeed, Dr. Wallace has distilled his extensive experience, providing the most up-to-date information on causes, prevention, cure, exercise, diet, and many other important topics. There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of lupus resource materials compiled by Dr. Wallace. This new seventh edition discusses new treatments, review of pathogenesis, new laboratory tests
