Library Journal Review
Krentz's latest paranormal mystery/romance is heavy on the woo-woo and short on the sexual tension. Abby Radwell's talent is unlocking magic within spelled or "hot" books. Sam Coppersmith works crystal energy. Sam needs Abby to unlock a hot tome coming up for auction. Unfortunately, Abby's talent makes her a valued commodity, and others are willing to kill to get her. Abby trusts Sam to keep her safe even if she isn't sure she trusts him on other levels. Narrator Tanya Eby is competent but unable to elevate the pedestrian prose into something more entertaining. She has a good feel for Abby, a strong woman who isn't afraid to show it, but the other characters, including Sam, are not as fully developed and provide less material to showcase. VERDICT Krentz is an essential purchase for public libraries, but be prepared for fan disappointment. ["Wicked wit, psi-enhanced passion, and a delightfully twisted plot come together with sparkling precision as Krentz delivers another funny, sexy, suspenseful paranormal gem, the first in a new series," read the more-appreciative review of the New York Times best-selling Putnam hc, LJ 12/11.-Ed.]-Jodi L. Publishers Weekly Review
Bestseller Krentz (Fired Up) describes a world where people will kill to get their hands on a book, but this disappointing series starter is unlikely to inspire such fervor. Abby Radwell, a rare book dealer with paranormal talents, likes to keep her business in the shallow end of the underground market. After she's held at gunpoint, she uses her abilities to escape, only to have a blackmailer threaten to reveal her talents. Sexy mad scientist Sam Coppersmith offers to protect Abby and track down the blackmailer if she'll hunt down a dangerous encrypted book in exchange. But Sam is interested in more than a business relationship, and the way their auras resonate makes sparks fly. Unfortunately, the contrived story is peppered with character inconsistencies, romance cliches, and plot twists that fail to surprise. (Jan.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Booklist Review
Technically, Sam Coppersmith might not be a private investigator, but he is exactly the man Abby Radwell needs to deal with her little problem. An antiquarian bookseller with a specialty in paranormally encrypted texts, she has been receiving anonymous notes that threaten to disclose secrets from her past unless Abby agrees to find a certain book for the blackmailer. Sam, an expert in rare minerals and paranormally charged crystals, is more than willing to take on the assignment, especially since he believes the book the blackmailer wants is the very same lab notebook his family has been trying to keep off the market (and out of the hands of crazies) for decades. However, things quickly become complicated between the two as Sam and Abby realize their simple business relationship is turning into something much more personal. Best-selling Krentz deftly invests Copper Beach, the first in her new Dark Legacy series, with a combustible combination of sharp wit, sizzling romance, and a riveting plot rich in paranormal-infused suspense.--Charles, John Copyright 2010 Booklist

Summary

A rare book. An ancient code. An all-new novel from the New York Times -bestselling master of passion and the paranormal.

Within the pages of very rare books some centuries old lie the secrets of the paranormal. Abby Radwell's unusual psychic talent has made her an expert in such volumes-and sometimes taken her into dangerous territory. After a deadly incident in the private library of an obsessive collector, Abby receives a blackmail threat, and rumors swirl that an old alchemical text known as The Key has reappeared on the black market.

Convinced that she needs an investigator who can also play bodyguard, she hires Sam Coppersmith, a specialist in paranormal crystals and amber-"hot rocks." Passion flares immediately between them, but neither entirely trusts the other. When it comes to dealing with a killer who has paranormal abilities, and a blackmailer who will stop at nothing to obtain an ancient alchemical code, no one is safe.
